Scared Mom: Pierced Ears
I was picking up my daughter at ballet and heard an ear piercing horror story: a girl in the ballet class got her ears pierced last week and developed a staph infection. The bottom of her little ear was black. She is receiving antibiotics and is on the mend, but now I’m scared. I promised my 9-year-old daughter she could get her ears pieced when she turns 10 in December. “What’s your advice?” I asked the girl’s grandmom. Go to La Lobe, she told me. Her granddaughter went elsewhere for the piercing. Any other advice out there for me? I found this fact sheet helpful:

I second the grandmother's comments. I had my ears pierced at La Lobe when I was 12 (I'm now 34) and it was the best ear piercing experience I've had (all they do there is pierce ears). They really put my mother and me at ease, it's very clean and sterile and they fully explain how to take care of your newly pierced ears (something that's just as important as a sterile piercing environment). I recently found out that one of my middle-aged friends had her ears pierced and when I asked her where she had them done, she replied "La Lobe." She was very happy with them and all these years later I'm still happy and impressed with them.
When your daughter gets her ears pierced, make sure you pick a place that you feel secure with to do the piercing (be it La Lobe or some place at the mall or wherever) and once she has them pierced make sure that she completes all the follow-up care of cleaning the holes, turning the posts, etc. By doing this, you'll minimize the chances of anything going wrong and both you and your daughter will be happy.
